Microbiology
(2nd year, 3rd semester – summer)
To acquaint the student with the following issues: taxonomy of microorganisms, physiological microbiota of the human body, characteristics of strictly pathogenic and opportunistic bacteria, viruses pathogenic for humans, mechanisms of bacterial and viral pathogenicity, the role of pathogens in the disease development, the occupational threat associated with infectious agents, basic forms of interrelationship between the microorganism and the host, methods of disinfection and sterilization, aseptic and antiseptic techniques, antimicrobial therapy (the rules of empiric and directed therapy), mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial drugs among microorganisms & basic rules of the microbiological diagnostics.

6-year MD Program
Emerging viral and bacterial diseases
optional (3nd year, 5rd semester – summer)
To acquaint the student with: emerging and still important pathogens causing respiratory tract infections: MERS-CoV, SARS CoV, Influenza virus, M. tuberculosis; epidemiology, diagnostics and treatment of haemorrhagic fevers caused by viruses (Arenavirus, Filovirus); epidemiology, diagnostics and treatment of vector-borne and zoonotic infections caused by viruses (Alphavirus, Flavivirus, Bunyavirus, Reovirus); epidemiology, diagnostics and treatment of vector-borne and zoonotic infections caused by bacteria (Rickettsiae, Borrelia, Yersinia, Pasteurella); biological weapon (Bio-agents). (Francisella, Bacillus antracis, Smallpox virus, Yersinia pestis, viral haemorrhagic fevers); prevention of viral and bacterial diseases: vaccines and immunoglobulins. Controversies in vaccine use; multidrug-resistant, extensively-resistant bacterial phenotypes.

Microbiology
(2nd year, 4rd semester – winter)
Course aim to the student with: classification of bacteria; morphology and biology of bacterial cell; mechanisms of pathogenicity of bacteria and viruses; antibiotics and chemotherapeutics; bacterial resistance to antibiotics; pathogenic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria relevant in dentistry; classification of viruses; morphology and replication of viruses in eukaryotic cells; mechanisms of viral pathogenicity; vaccines and antiviral drugs; DNA and RNA viruses relevant in dentistry; human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and AIDS; microbiology of human oral cavity; bacteria in etiology and pathogenesis of dental caries and periodontal diseases.
